Pīwauwau (Rock Wren)

The New Zealand rock wren is a small wren endemic to the South Island. They are our only true alpine bird, adapted to survive in harsh environments. Due to being poor fliers they prefer to nest on the ground, which makes them easy targets for predators and are now very rarely seen. They are known for their sweet and melodic songs. Their given Māori name Pīwauwau means “little complaining bird”.
